Project Description:
Cretaceous-Cenozoic rock units on Bylot Island and Baffin Island in the vicinity of Pond Inlet (2017-2018) and Scott Inlet (2018) will be studied to determine details of the stratigraphic successions and their ages. Previously collected, as well as new, samples will be precisely located in measured stratigraphic sections, providing information on age, sedimentology and depositional environments, chemical composition and physical properties of the strata, and organic geochemistry to better constrain the extent of possible source rocks. Important consideration will be given to developing models of sedimentary facies relationships, especially with respect to the extent of stratigraphic traps for petroleum accumulation. Geological mapping will establish the structural regime and its relationship to possible petroleum trapping mechanisms. Detailed understanding of age and outcrop sedimentology will allow identification of regional and local unconformities, and provide a sequence stratigraphic framework for the onshore succession. Field work will be undertaken over 2 seasons with logistical support coordinated with the Polar Continental Shelf Program (PSCP). Project results will be presented to local communities immediately upon conclusion of each field season, and scientific conclusions will be published in appropriate scientific journals, as well as a format available to local communities, at the end of the project.
Summary of Modifications:
Fieldwork in 2017 was successfully completed and all summary reports filed. Fieldwork in 2018 will take place ca. July 11-25 (note that 'Start Date' and 'End Date' fields of NPC website do not allow updating of these fields from 2017 values) and consist of 3 days of helicopter flying out of Clyde River to study rocks exposed at Scott Inlet lowlands, NW of Scott Inlet. Then, approximately 10 days will be spent flying by helicopter out of Pond Inlet, to study rocks exposed on Bylot Island and adjacent areas of Baffin Island. Only 2 scientists will be undertaking fieldwork in 2018 and the field season will be significantly reduced, approximately 14 days total. (Note that 'Personnel' field of NPC website does not allow updating these numbers from the 2017 values.) No camping will be undertaken.
