At the request of Parks Canada’s Nunavut Field Unit, the survey by the Underwater Archaeology Team will aim to document (in detail) the partial hull remains of a wooden sailing ship, first detected by local Inuit in the 1820s, and believed to represent the beached wreckage of a British whaler in Maud Bight. The hull remains, which are located in Sirmilik National Park, will be archaeologically documented. This permit application also encompasses additional underwater survey which will be conducted to locate any additional wreckage that might be found in the waters immediately offshore.
The Maud Bight Wreck (210X3) is located in Sirmilik National Park on the north shore of Bylot Island Migratory Bird Sanctuary (MBS) (see attached map). The known hull remains are found on land, above the high tide mark, approximately 100 m inshore from the beach at Maud Bight. There is the possibility of additional hull remains being detected in the 3.2 km offshore extension of the MBS boundary.
PROPOSED DATE AND DURATION OF VISIT:
The survey will be of brief duration, lasting only 1 or 2 days (approximately the 1st and 2nd of October, 2018, depending on weather and sea ice conditions).
METHOD OF TRANSPORTATION:
The survey will be staged from the 29 m Parks Canada Research Vessel David Thompson, which will anchor offshore. A 5.90 m Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) will be launched from the ship, to deploy the survey team to the wreck site, and also to conduct sonar survey in search of additional wreckage offshore.
REMOTE SENSING SURVEY:
The RHIB will be used to deploy sonar (towed side-scan and multi-beam) to detect any additional hull remains that might potentially be found offshore. The terrestrial survey will involve an estimated 3 people for 1 or 2 days. Likewise, the marine survey will involve an estimated 3 people for 1 or 2 days.
Side-scan sonar survey will be deployed from the RHIB, The UAT has assembled a range of suitably compact and weather resistant hardware for the purpose. A Klein 3000 dual-frequency side-scan sonar system with waterproof processor, computer, satellite positioning equipment, and metering sheave tow block will be used, with the 75m tow cable paid out hand from the RHIB.
Multi-beam Echo Sounder
Parks Canada Underwater Archaeology Team will deploy two multi-beam echosounder systems (MBES) during the survey. These systems plot a swath of high density bottom soundings along a surface vessel’s survey track, providing detailed 3D imagery of seafloor topography. The first system is a hull mounted R2Sonic MBES system, model 2024, which is installed in the RV David Thompson and which will be used to survey in deeper waters following the shoreline. The second system is a pole mounted Norbit MBES, model iWBMSh, which will be deployed from the RHIB. Both MBES systems offer variable 200-400 kHz frequency selection, with high resolution imaging capacity at 700 kHz.
Surface vessel positioning and geo-rectification of the resultant side-scan and MBES data will be achieved by means of differential satellite navigation. Coordinate information will be registered using GPS receivers installed on the survey platforms, interfaced with their respective navigation and sonar systems. Differential corrections will be registered by the receivers' access to Satellite Broadcast Augmentation System (SBAS), which should yield a real time positioning accuracy in the order of 1 m. The RV David Thompson is also equipped with a POS MV 320 inertial navigation system that will enable post-processed positioning accuracy of 1cm for the MBES data.
All side-scan sonar coverage will subsequently be assembled by the UAS into an area map using Chesapeake Technology’s SonarWiz mosaic generation software. This mosaic will show the overall underwater topography of the survey area as well as any discernible cultural features and their geographic context in relation to surrounding land forms. The MBES data will be processed using the QPS Qimera software package. The side-scan mosaic and MBES data will ultimately be incorporated as a layer within a Geographic Information System (GIS) to be developed as part of the overall data management strategy for the project.
High potential targets identified in the course of the side-scan and MBES survey will initially be verified using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). This inspection-class unit is depth rated for 300 m and is equipped with high intensity LED lights and on-board video cameras that can feed SD and HD images directly to the surface through an umbilical. Following verification by ROV wreck sites which rest within depths allowing SCUBA diving will be inspected by divers (depths of 40m or less). COMMUNITY CONSULTATION AND INVOLVEMENT:
The interest of Parks Canada’s Underwater Archaeology Team to conduct archaeological survey of the Maud Bight Wreck (210X3) was communicated by letters sent via e-mail on 23 March 2018, to the Hamlet of Pond Inlet and the HTA – Mittamatalik, respectively.
Parks Canada has also been exploring the possibility of staffing a Nunavut beneficiary to work on the RV David Thompson in October 2018. If a graduate of the Nunavut Marine Fisheries Training Consortium holding the requisite STCW Marine Basic Safety and STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft certificates can be identified, this person could be staffed as one of the ship’s deck hands for various surveys along the Baffin Island coast, and would support the marine survey in Maud Bight.
This shipwreck is a rare if not unique example of an early 19th century British whaling ship. This wreck will provide a comparison to other, later, vessels which were later converted for service in the arctic by the British Royal Navy including HMS 'Fury' (when located), HMS 'Investigator', HMS 'Erebus' and HMS 'Terror'.
Additionally this survey will provide an update on the sites condition, which can be compared to the 1994 survey conducted by Doug Stenton.
